LET’S TALK ABOUT DRY EYE
By Dr Nisara Bandali
Do you suffer from a sandy, gritty feeling in your eyes? Do your eyes feel like they’re itching and burning constantly? Do you experience intermittent blur while watching television, driving or doing computer work? You may be experiencing symptoms of Dry Eye Syndrome (DES).
Dry Eye Syndrome is when the tear film that lubricates the surface of the eyes is not being maintained. Dry eye can occur if sufficient tears are not being produced or if there is an increase in the tear evaporation off the ocular surface.
There are several factors that can put you at risk for dry eye. Women are at a higher risk to experience symptoms than men. Dry eye can also occur with the use of certain medications including, but not limited to, anti-depressants, hormone therapy, medication for high blood pressure or anti-allergy medications.
Environmental factors can also play a role in DES. Some examples are frequent air travel, living or working in dry, windy climates, and extensive use of TV, smart phones or computer screens.
Contact lens wear can also result in DES as well as refractive surgeries such as LASIK, PRK as well as cataract surgery.
Find out if you suffer from dry eye from your Optometrists at Regal Eye Care. We can diagnose DES by a series of tests that can examine the health of the ocular surface in detail. DES can be chronic and can sometimes cause a decrease in vision or even corneal nerve damage if not treated properly. Book an appointment at Regal Eye Care today for more information on how to treat and manage your dry eye.
