Comprehensive Eye Examination

The eye is the window to the body. A comprehensive eye examination can help uncover many eye-related and systemic illnesses. The leading causes of blindness in the world today are glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, cataract and macular degeneration. A thorough eye examination is essential to ensuring your eyes will last your lifetime. Earlier detection of eye disease means a better outcome for your vision.

A comprehensive eye examination includes an in-depth assessment of the following:

1. Your current health status, prior eye history and family history. 
2. Your visual needs and school or workplace needs
3. An assessment of your vision with or without glasses
4. An evaluation of your eye muscle coordination, muscle balance, and pupillary reflexes
5. Your eye prescription and determination of the best lenses for your needs. 
6. A thorough assessment of your eye health externally and internally, which may include evaluation with high resolution cameras and imaging devices to help detect any defects.  
7. A discussion regarding your visual needs and the status of your eye's health

Pediatric Eye Care

Experts agree that 80% of all learning is visual. Children are our most precious asset. Nearly 10% of all children suffer from eye problems, such as lazy or crossed eyes, eye coordination difficultly or even damage to the eye tissues. Unfortunately, most children will not verbalize that they cannot see well. According to numerous pediatric optometry and ophthalmology groups, children should be examined in the first year of life, then before starting school and each year thereafter. Very early detection and treatment of poor vision in children is important for visual development. Poor vision is simply an unnecessary barrier to learning. Children's eye examinations are covered by OHIP until 19 years of age. Our optometrists have completed residency (post-doctoral) training programs in pediatric optometry and binocular vision.

Ocular Allergies

Allergies can make your eyes feel terrible. Symptoms of eye allergies can include redness, itching, watering and puffiness. Allergies can affect over 25% of the population. Sometimes allergies can be seasonal and sometimes they can last year-round. Often patients use over-the-counter treatments that may not be the correct medication.  Let us find what treatments work best for your eyes because everyone's eyes are unique.

Urgent Eye Care

Emergencies happen. We are here to help. Some eye conditions are serious and it may not be practical to wait a few days to get treated. We are available to look after any emergency eye care conditions, including metal pieces in the eyes, sudden loss of vision, red or painful eyes, double vision, inflammation of the eyes (iritis or uveitis), injuries to the eyes or any other problems. Our staff go out of their way to accommodate your eye care needs. 

Red Eye

There are many reasons why eyes can get red. Some reasons include viral or bacterial infections, ulcers, misuse of contact lenses, certain types of glaucoma, inflammation inside the eye, injury, or others. Do not take any risks with your eyes. Our optometrists can evaluate and treat red eyes.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a progressive eye disease that can lead to blindness if left untreated. It is one of the top causes of blindness in Canada. Unfortunately, most people do not realize they have glaucoma until a significant amount of vision has been lost. At Regal Eye Care, we can assess for glaucoma and monitor any suspicion for glaucoma using our hospital grade equipment. Our optometrists spend a significant amount of time discussing your treatment options so that you understand your eye condition. Together, we can prevent blindness!

Advance Eye Care Technology

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

Optical Coherence Tomography is a high resolution scan that creates three dimensional images of the inside layers of the eye. Sometimes these layers of the eye are not readily visible with traditional eye examination equipment. The OCT performs 53,000 scans/second to achieve a layer-by-layer analysis of the ocular tissues. The OCT is capable of analyzing changes in retinal tissues and optic nerve tissue over time. This is why the OCT is critical in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma and any retinal diseases such as macular degeneration.

Ocular Photography

Have you ever seen what the inside of the eye looks like? High resolution photos of the eye are an important technique used for assessing eye health. Small changes in the retina or the optic nerve can be photographed and monitored over time.

Digitized Visual Field Assessment

In a standard eye exam, the sharpness of your vision is measured by how well you can see the letters on a chart. But, have you ever thought about how your peripheral vision can be measured accurately? Visual Field Analyzers are the solution. This piece of equipment digitally assesses the sensitivity of your peripheral vision. This is a key technique used to monitor many nerve diseases such as glaucoma, or subtle changes in your vision that may occur from medication use. You also need great peripheral vision for driving and moving around comfortably in your environment without stumbling or falling.

Vision Therapy

Is your child falling behind in school, not reading at grade level, or having trouble focusing?
Lazy eye and eye coordination problems can often contribute to poor academic performance, weak depth perception, and headaches in children and adults. Just like our two feet work together so we can walk comfortably, both eyes need to work together so we can see comfortably.

Eye exercises and vision training are techniques used to improve vision and eye coordination. Unlike traditional techniques, modern day vision therapy looks beyond the eyeballs to understand how vision works with the rest of the body. Various methods such as free space orthoptics or computerized orthoptics may be used to improve vision and visual function.

Eye Exercises, Concussions and Functional Vision Assessments

Comfortable vision can only happen when eyestrain is not present. Poor eye coordination can often lead to headaches and poor academic or work performance. Our eye doctors are trained to do binocular vision assessments and provide eye training to patients who need to improve their muscle balance and eye coordination. An eye exercise program is customized to your needs to help improve the way your eyes work together. 

Often after concussions, strokes or accidents, patients will suffer from double vision or from other changes in their vision. Our optometrists can assess patients with double vision and provide treatment options to improve the vision and alleviate symptoms.
Patients with certain types of disabilities may be at greater risk for vision problems. We are the only clinic locally offering functional vision assessments. These assessments help caregivers and educators understand the extent of the patient’s visual abilities, even if the patient is non-verbal.
