What is your Skin Type?

In order to choose the best skincare regimen and prevent aging and damage from harsh environments, it is important to know your skin type. We always recommend you visit a professional, however, there are 5 basic types that are always talked about by the media, professionals and brands. They are: Normal, oily, dry, combination and sensitive.

The best way to figure out your skin type outside of a professional is to blot your face in specific areas, first thing in the morning before cleansing on a clean tissue. The below outcome will determine your skin type.

Skin Type Analysis

Normal Skin: Has good circulation and there will no trace of oil on the tissue. Normal skin is soft, with a smooth, even skin tone.

Oily Skin: Will leave blots of oil on the tissue, mainly from the cheeks, nose and forehead. Oily skin has overactive sebaceous glands, producing more oil than necessary and can be inherited or caused by diet, hormone levels, pregnancy, the wrong skincare ingredients or products and stress. All of which lead to acne breakouts and enlarged pores. It is important to thoroughly clean the skin regularly with gentle, soap-free cleansers.

Dry Skin: Has a low level of sebum and does not maintain oil easily and leaves nothing on the tissue. Dry skin can be flakey and feels tight, sometimes a bit sore after being wiped or washed. Gentle cleansing and a rich protective moisturizer for dry skin is essential to control that tight, uncomfortable feeling.

Combination Skin: Oil is produced around the ‘T-zone’ of the nose and forehead but not on the cheeks, mouth and eye areas, this will reflect on the tissue used to blot the face. The best skin care for combination skin will involve treating each area differently or deciding which area is worse and using a mild product for the most active area.

Sensitive Skin: Can mean different things to different people. It can be caused by skin conditions such as rosacea, eczema or allergies. Sensitive skin can become inflamed and irritated easily; it will look red in areas and sometimes bumpy. It is important to choose the right skin care for sensitive skin because many cleansers and moisturizers contain ingredients that can cause an adverse reaction. With sensitive skin it is incredibly important to visit a professional.

Once you have determined your skin type you need to figure out the best products for yourself, by skin type and maturity, as well as lifestyle such as diet, stress and exposure to the elements.

When choosing a product find ones that contains the most amount of active ingredients and less fillers. Test them to ensure you will not breakout or cause damage to your skin.

Using the right tools are also important, such as exfoliating cloths or brushes that are not too harsh. Face-It is a fantastic cloth that is made of micro-fibre and designed in a heart shape to contour the face reaching every crevice and can be washed and dried on low.

Skin treatments and therapy are also a fantastic way to look after your skin. Although some treatments can be done at home with product it is always a good idea to do a professional treatment from time to time. Work with your aesthetician to find the best fit for your skin and remember to maintain your specific regimen in between.
