Glaucoma, known as "the silent thief", slowly damages your optic nerve making it one of the leading causes of blindness in Canada. It most frequently occurs in individuals over the age of 40, with the risk of the disease increasing with age. Individuals with diabetes, high blood pressure, or eye injuries have an increased chance of developing glaucoma. Glaucoma comes in two forms, the first being open angle glaucoma which is the most common form of glaucoma. There are no symptoms in open angle glaucoma until the individual experiences peripheral vision loss, which is why it is referred to as "the silent thief". The second and rarer form of the disease, closed angle glaucoma, results when there is a sudden rise in the pressure within the eye, causing pain, blurred vision and halo's around light. Untreated, both forms can lead to complete loss of vision. As there is no way to prevent glaucoma, a comprehensive eye examination is recommended even if you can see well, or do not wear glasses. At Regal Eye Care, we can assess the eyes for glaucoma and monitor any suspicion for glaucoma using our hospital grade equipment. Our doctor spends a significant amount of time discussing your treatment options so that you understand your eye condition. Together, we can prevent blindness!
